Terrapin Station

Terrapin Station was first performed by the Grateful Dead in February 1977. In total the Grateful Dead played the song over 300 times between 1977 and 1995.

The Terrapin Suite that appears on the original album is part 1 of the full Terrapin Station suite. On the album Terrapin Station is split into 7 parts: Lady With A Fan; Terrapin Station; Terrapin; Terrapin Transit; At A Siding; Terrapin Flyer and Refrain. In performance the Grateful Dead generally played Lady With A Fan and Terrapin Station as a single entity and this is usually simply described as Terrapin Station on setlists. Recordings below include those of the full part 1, the Lady With A Fan > Terrapin Station pairing and performances of just one of the parts.

In an interview in 1991 Garcia spoke about song writing and, briefly, Terrapin;

Well I don't write them [songs] unless I absolutely have to. I don't wake up in the morning and say 'Jeez, I feel great today. I think I'll write a song.' I mean, anything is more interesting to me than writing a song. It's like, 'I think I'd like to write a song .... No, I guess I better go feed the cat first.' You know what I mean? It's like pulling teeth. I don't enjoy it a bit.
I don't think I've ever actually written from inspiration, actually had a song just go bing! I only recall that happening to me twice; once was with Terrapin and the other was Wharf Rat. I mean that's twice in a lifetime of writing.

In an open letter to Garcia written in 1996, a year after Garcia's death, Robert Hunter wrote:

Terrapin. Shame about the record, but the concert piece, the first night it was played, took me about as close as I ever expect to get to feeling certain we were doing what we were put here to do.
