Notes

Played by Jerry and Sarah Garcia at the Tangent in Palo Alto in May 1963.

Authorship uncertain. Does not appear to occur before recordings by the Carter Family and Monroe Brothers in the 1930s.

Most commonly called Foggy Mountain Top but sometimes occurs as On Some Foggy Mountain Top.

The lyrics of the version performed by Jerry and Sarah Garcia are as follows;

If I was on some foggy mountain top
I'd sail away to the west
I'd sail all around this old round world
To the girl I love the best.

It caused me to weep, it caused me to moan,
It caused me to leave my home
The lonesome pines and the good old times
I'm on my way back home.

If I was on some foggy mountain top
I'd sail away to the west
I'd sail all around this old round world
To the girl I love the best.

Now if I'd listened to what my mother said
I would not be here today
Just lying around this old jail house
Just wasting my young life away.

If I was on some foggy mountain top
I'd sail away to the west
I'd sail all around this old round world
To the girl I love the best.

Now if you see that gal of mine
There's something I want you to tell her
Tell her to not go waiting for me
Go court some other feller.

If I was on some foggy mountain top
I'd sail away to the west
I'd sail all around this old round world
To the girl I love the best.
