Stealin' was performed a handful of times by the Grateful Dead in 1966. It was one of the songs rehearsed by the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan prior to the 1987 Dylan & The Dead tour but it was not performed live during the tour.

Stealin' was performed a number of times by David Grisman and Jerry Garcia in 1992 and 1994. A studio version was released on their Shady Grove CD and transcriptions from that recording can be found in the books Shady Grove Acoustic Guitar Solos and Shady Grove Mandolin Solos.

Stealin' was also played by Ratdog, Phil Lesh & Friends, Phil Lesh with the Terrapin Family Band, and the Weir / Robinson / Greene Trio.

The song was originally recorded in its present form by the Memphis Jug Band in September 1928 and released with the title Stealin' Stealin'. The song is often credited on recordings to Will Shade of the Memphis Jug Band. Some recordings credit Gus Cannon who in later years claimed to have written some or all of the song. The song incorporates lyrics that occur in earlier songs.
