Grisman notes in his introductory note in the original CD booklet that he and Garcia recorded songs at the Dawg Studios over a period of five years starting in August 1990, sometimes scheduled sessions, sometimes spur of the moment. Shady Grove was the first album to be released from this collection of recordings. The tracks on Shady Grove were recorded on the following dates:
