Garcia spoke about Lazy River Road in an interview with Jon Sievert for Guitar Player magazine in 1993;

When we started working on that I wasn't sure if it was going to be a shuffle or what. It's the kind of song that can go in any number of ways, because stylistically it's wide open and you can phrase it any way. I was trying all kinds of things when I was writing on the keyboard. It wasn't until we actually started to try to work on it that it started to get a rhythmic feel. The one that we've got for it seems real natural for it now, although it feels to me like it's starting to be wanting to pick up tempo a little bit.
