Notes
A Paul McCartney song. The single, produced by George Martin, was released in the UK in April 1969 with Don't Let Me Down on the b-side. In the US it was released on a single in May 1969. The single gives the performers as The Beatles with Billy Preston, giving Preston the distinction of being the only person to share credits with the Beatles on record.
The song was partly written in the studio in January 1969. The main part was recorded on January 27, 1969. This version, with a few additions, was released as the single. A number of versions of the album that became Let It Be, but was originally to be called Get Back, were planned during 1969. The LP, including Get Back, eventually appeared in a different format in 1970. Get Back was performed twice during the famous rooftop performance that appeared in the Let It Be film. The version of the song on the Anthology 3 collection is one of these live performances.
The released versions of the song are less controversial than earlier versions. Originally written as a satire on British immigration laws. One enduring topic of argument amongst Beatles commentators is whether the original versions were anti-racist or racist.
At the end of the album version of the song McCartney is heard to say, "Thanks, Mo" - referring to Ringo's wife Maureen Starkey who was applauding in the background.
