Clinch Mountain Backstep was played by Jerry Garcia with the Hart Valley Drifters in late 1962. It was also one of the tunes played by Jerry Garcia during a banjo lesson / demonstration on April 14, 1964.

Ruby Rakes was the name used on song credits by Ruby Rakes Eubanks, who was a half sister of the Stanley Brothers. She was assigned the rights to a number of songs written by the Stanley Brothers. The actual songwriter was probably Carter Stanley.
