Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)

The inspiration for Caution was explained in an interview by Bob Weir;

We were driving around listening to the radio .... And the song Mystic Eyes by Them was on, and we were saying, 'Check this out! We can do this!' So we got to the club where we were playing and we warmed up on it. We lifted the riff from Mystic Eyes and extrapolated it into Caution, I think Pigpen just made up the words.

The writing credits for Caution on Anthem of the Sun are given as McKernan. On the Golden Road box set the credits are Garcia/Kreutzmann/Lesh/McKernan/Weir on all other vault releases the credits are Grateful Dead.

Caution was first recorded by the Grateful Dead in November 1965. It was probably first performed live around this time though the first documented performance is from January 1966. It was part of the live repertoire through to the Europe tour in the Spring of 1972 and during this period was performed most regularly in 1968 and 1969. After 1972 a jam based on Caution was performed a number of times in 1974, 1978, 1979 and 1981. The last of these being captured on Dick's Picks, Vol. 13.
