The Grateful Dead Play Bo Diddley

The Grateful Dead played a set with Bo Diddley on March 25, 1972. On a few other occasions the Grateful Dead have played Bo Diddley songs. This page documents these songs and officially released recordings of the songs.

Bo Diddley and the Grateful Dead played the first set of the March 25, 1972 "Jerry Garcia & Friends" show at the Academy of Music in New York. The songs performed during the set with Bo Diddley are listed to the right. Click on the "info" button for more information about the songs.

Note that on set lists of this show You Know I Love You So is nearly always given the title Wow Wow Hey Hey and Say Boss Man is often given the title Eighteen Children.

Dick's Picks, Vol. 30

Part of the Bo Diddley/Grateful Dead set were released on Dick's Picks, Vol. 30.

The songs included were Bo Diddley, I'm A Man, I've Seen Them All, the first jam and Mona. On the DP 30 cover Bo Diddley is identified as Hey Bo Diddley.

The Grateful Dead Play Bo Diddley: The Songs

Bo Diddley

Bo Diddley was performed by the Grateful Dead with Bo Diddley on March 25, 1972. The CD release of this song, Dick's Picks 30, lists the song as Hey Bo Diddley.

A short amalgam of the songs Bo Diddley and Hey Bo Diddley was performed by the Grateful Dead in London 23 May 1972 and subsequently released on Steppin' Out with the Grateful Dead: England '72 where it is called Hey Bo Diddley.

The song was also played by Jerry Garcia whilst sitting in with the Allman Brothers Band on December 31, 1973.

Hey Bo Diddley

Hey Bo Diddley, merged with the song Bo Diddley, was performed by the Grateful Dead in London 23 May 1972 and subsequently released on Steppin' Out with the Grateful Dead: England '72. The Grateful Dead performed the song with the Neville Brothers in 1986.

A studio outtake of the song was included on All Good Things: Jerry Garcia Studio Sessions. This version also includes verses that are from the song Bo Diddley.

Who Do You Love

Who Do You Love was performed twice by the Grateful Dead during the European tour in 1972. On both occasions a partial version of the song was played in the middle of other songs. One of these performances was released as part of the Golden Road, 1965-1973 box set and subsequently on the expanded version of Europe '72.

The Grateful Dead rehearsed the song in 1966 but it is not known if it was performed live at that time.

You Know I Love You So was performed by the Grateful Dead with Bo Diddley on March 25, 1972.

This song was listed on Grateful Dead tapes and set lists as Wow Wow Hey Hey until Eric Levy discovered the true identity in 2008.
