Box Of Rain
Composer: Phil Lesh / Robert Hunter

Box Of Rain was first performed by the Grateful Dead in October 1972. The song was played regularly in 1972 and 1973 but was then dropped from the repertoire. It returned on March 1986 and was subsequently performed a dozen or so times each year through to 1995. Box Of Rain was last song to be played live by the Grateful Dead, the second encore song on July 9, 1995.

Robert Hunter explained the origin of this song in his notes in Box Of Rain: Lyrics 1965-1993;

Phil Lesh wanted a song to sing to his dying father and had composed a piece complete with every vocal nuance but the words. If ever a lyric 'wrote itself' this did - as fast as the pen would pull.
