Yellow Rose Of Texas
Composer: J. K. / Traditional

Yellow Rose Of Texas was only noodled by the Grateful Dead during tuning.

The first copyright for this song is for a published version in 1858. The credits on that publication were given as "Composed and Arranged Expressly for Charles H. Brown by J.K.". However the song is thought to have existed before that time. The composer is uncertain. It is possible that the original title of the song was Emily, the Maid of Morgan's Point and that is is based on a real person called Emily D. West. The song became a popular marching song in the 19th century. For an introduction to the history of the song see the Yellow Rose of Texas page on the Handbook of Texas Online.

The song occurs with many variations in the lyrics and there are a number of well known parodies. One reworked version of the song, recorded by Mitch Miller, topped the pop charts for a number of weeks in 1955.
