Rip It Up was played by the Grateful Dead at a soundcheck on December 12, 1973. The song was also played by Kingfish but not when Bob Weir was a member of the group.

The song was first released by Little Richard in June 1956 on a single. This version reached #17 in the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Billboard R&B charts. It has subsequently been recorded many times.
