KC Moan was played by the Grateful Dead on January 17, 1978 in Chicago. The song was played during an acoustic set that featured only Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart.

KC Moan was possibly played by Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions rehearsals in Palo Alto sometime in 1964 but no tape circulates. The song has been played by The Dead, Ratdog and Phil Lesh & Friends.

On many recordings the writing credits are given as Tewee Blackman who was a member of the Memphis Jug Band. It is thought however that the song pre-dates the Memphis Jug Band.
