The original version was first recorded by , but probably not written by, Ann Cole. The writers of this early version are not known. Muddy Waters toured with Ann Cole in the late 50's, liked the song, and added lyrics to produce a new version.

Most subsequent versions credit just Muddy Waters as writer or credit Muddy Waters and Preston Foster. Some versions credit just Preston Foster.

Original version had the full title "Got My Mojo Workin, But It Just Won't Work On You)". Also occurs as "I've Got My Mojo Workin" or "I Got My Mojo Workin".
