Eighth Of January
Composer: Traditional

Eighth Of January was played by Jerry Garcia with the Asphalt Jungle Mountain Boys in 1964.

The origins of this piece are uncertain. It possibly has its roots in Ireland or Britain. In the US some sources state that it was originally called Jackson's Victory. Other sources state that it had a name that included an Irish place name. However at some point the title became Eighth Of January (or 8th Of January). Both the Jackson's Victory and Eighth Of January titles reference the Battle of New Orleans on January 8th, 1815.

It was a popular fiddle tune by the time it was first recorded.

Jimmie Driftwood used the melody of Eighth Of January as the basis of his song Battle Of New Orleans.
