Baba O'Riley

Composer: Pete Townshend

Baba O'Riley was introduced into the Grateful Dead repertoire by Vince Welnick in the early 1990s. They performed the song about a dozen times between May 1992 and November 1994.

Vince Welnick performed the song with the Tubes in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The song was also played by Bob Weir and Vince Welnick with the Valentines in 1994. Phil Lesh & Friends played Baba O'Riley in 1998 and 2017 and Phil Lesh also played the song with Rich Price and the Foundation in 2007.

Baba O'Riley was written for the Lifehouse project which was to be a follow-up to Tommy. When project was shelved Baba O'Riley was one of the Lifehouse songs that was used on the Who's Next album which was released in August 1971. The song was released on a single in some European countries but not in the UK or US. The title of the song reflects the spiritual influence of Meher Baba and the musical incluence of Terry Riley.
