Rio Theater, Rodeo

The Rio Theater was located at 140 Parker Avenue in Rodeo. The venue opened in 1940 as a movie theater with a capacity of 600. It was used also as a music venue in the late 1960s and it is probably that Jerry Garcia sat in with the Sons Of Champlin during a show at the theater in 1969.

The theater closed for a few years in the early 1970's and reopened in 1976 initially as a movie theater but then as a music venue toward the end of the decade. During this period the Jerry Garcia Band, Reconstruction and Roadhog (including Robert Hunter) played at the Rio Theater. The theater closed for the last time in 1980 or 1981.

The building is now used as a church.

Recordings

There appear to be no officially released recordings of live music from the Rio Theater. However a number of shows from the venue are available on archive.org.
