The song was written by Tracy Schwarz in 1966 when he was working as a farmer during a period of drought. It was first released by the Strange Creek Singers (Mike Seeger, Tracy Schwarz, Hazel Dickens, Alice Gerrard and Lamar Grier) in 1972.
