New York Ramble was first recorded by the New York Ramblers, including David Grisman, in 1965.

The piece was recorded in 1974, by a group that included David Grisman and Jerry Garcia, for the soundtrack of the movie Big Bad Mama. This recording was not released until its inclusion on the Dawg Works Vol 1 collection.

This composition was later renamed Dawggy Mountain Breakdown. It was released with this title on the Dawg Grass / Dawg Jazz album.
