The song was written by Syd Barrett and originally released in 1967 on the Piper at the Gates of Dawn album. The song originally included verses from Cautionary Tales by Hilaire Belloc but permission was not granted for the use of these lyrics and the song had to be rewritten.

The song sometimes occurs as Mathilda Mother.
