Written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes in 1962. The original version has Portuguese lyrics and the title Garota De Ipanema. The song was possibly first recorded by Pery Ribeiro. English lyrics were written by Norman Gimbel. The song became hugely popular after the success of the Stan Getz / Astrud Gilberto / Joao Gilberto version in 1964.

The main theme of The Girl From Ipanema was incorporated into a jam by the Grateful Dead during a rehearsal on February 28, 1975.
