At the time of recording the original version of the song Fontella Bass and Bobby McClure were both members of the Oliver Sain Revue. Oliver Sain, a well known St. Louis saxophonist, band leader, songwriter, producer and studio owner, also produced the original recording.
The Fontella Bass and Bobby McClure version of Don't Mess Up A Good Thing reached #5 in the R&B charts. The song was recorded at Chess studios in Chicago and released on the Chess subsidiary label Checker.
