The tune is thought to be an English Morris dance tune possibly dating back to the 18th century. An arrangement by Percy Grainger for piano and orchestra became well-known in the 20th century. It now appears with the titles Country Gardens, English Country Garden, and In An English Country Garden. There are English and American variations in the lyrics of more recent versions. There are also a number of parodies.
