Foreword: Bob Weir

Over a hundred full color reproductions of paintings, drawings and prints by Jerry Garcia edited by April Higashi, the art curator and archivist for the Jerry Garcia estate. The chapters are separated by "interludes" containing photographs and anecdotes and remembrances by cultural figures and friends and family including Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Bob Weir, Tom Cruise, Herb Gold, Dana Crumb, Baron Wolman, Robert Rauschenberg, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Jon Carroll, Al Gore, Paul Pena, Bonnie Raitt, and members of the Garcia and Grateful Dead families.

Three editions were initially produced. In addition to hardback and paperback editions of the standard book a special limited edition of 2,500 copies was produced. This edition is housed in cloth clamshell box that includes an expanded version of the book, a limited edition print and companion CD featuring music covering Jerry's entire career. The expanded book contains six additional fold-out pages of photographs which are not in the standard edition.

A new edition of the book entitled Jerry Garcia: The Collected Artwork (Collectors Edition) was published in 2007.
